Lylee

Ahmad Zahir  ·  1977

Lylee drew on the ancient Layla and Majnun narrative tradition to create a sustained meditation on impossible love. Zahir treated the classical source material with considerable freedom, updating the story's imagery for a modern Kabul audience while preserving its essential emotional architecture. The album crossed genre boundaries more freely than its predecessors, incorporating brief passages that recalled Indian ghazal singers such as Mehdi Hassan alongside distinctly Afghan melodic modes.
