Separation from companions is not wise To travel without light is not wise
When you have witnessed sovereignty and kingship After royalty, to beg is not wise
The Friend calls you to be without yourself This self-ness of yours is not wise
When the heavenly table has come to this world Poverty hereafter is not wise
In this kitchen where souls are offered as sacrifice To snatch another's bread is not wise
Tell that greed and avarice, that highway robber Deceit and showing harm are not wise
When you have feet, walk — set your hands in motion For you, having neither hands nor feet is not wise
When your feet give out, you will be given wings To soar without wings is not wise
When you find wings, fly toward God's snare To flee from that snare is not wise
O brother, the Huma of the Mount of Nearness — For the Huma, anything but being itself is not wise
Seek the world — purity is the sea and you are the fish To be a stranger to this stream is not wise
Be silent, and dissolve into the ocean of the Real To play games with divinity is not wise

Cho molk o padshahi deeda bashi Pas az shahi gadahi maslehat nest
Shoma ra be shoma mekhwand aan bar Shoma ra ein shomayee maslehat nest
Cho khwan aaseman aamad ba donya Azein pas benawayee maslehat nest
Darein matbakh ke qorbanist janha Cho doo naan naan robayee matlehat nest
Bego aan hars o az rahzan ra Ke makr o bad nemayee maslehat nest
Cho pa dari beraw daste bejonban Tura be dast o payee maslehat nest
Cho pay tu namanad por dehandat Ke be par dar hawayee maslehat nest
Cho par yabi basoyee daam haq par Ke az damash rehayee maslehat nest
Homaye qaf qarbe ay beradar Homa ra joz homayee maslehat nest
Jahan joyee o safa bahr o tu mahi Darein jo aashenayee maslehat nest
Khamosh bash o fanaye bahr haq sho Banbazi khodayee maslehat nest

ز هـمـراهان جُدايی مـصلحت نيست سـفر بی روشنایی مـصلحت نيست
چـو مـلـک و پادشـاهـی ديـده بـاشـی پس از شاهی گدايی مصلحت نيست
شـمـا را بـی شـمـا مـیـخـوانـد آن يـار شـمـا را اين شمايی مصـلحت نيست
چـو خـوان آسـمـان آمـد بـه دنـيا ازیـن پـس بـيـنـوايـی مصلحت نيست
دريـن مـطـبـخ کـه قـربـانســت جانها چو دو نان نان رُبايی مطلحت نيست
بـگـو آن حـرص و آز راهزن را که مکـر و بد نـمـايـی مصلحت نيست
چـو پا داری بـرو دسـتـی بـجـنـبـان ترا بی دسـت و پايی مصلحت نيست
چـو پـای تو نـمـانـد پَر دهـنـدت که بی پر در هوايی مصلحت نيست
چـو پَـر يـابـی بـسـوی دام حـّق پَـر که از دامش رهايی مصلحت نيست
هُـمـای قـاف قـربـی ای برادر هُـمـا را جز هُـمـايی مصلحت نيست
جـهـان جـوی و صـفـا بحـر و تو مـاهـی دريـن جـو آشـنـايـی مصلحت نيست
خـمُـش باش و فـنای بـحـر حـق شـو بـانـبـازی خدايی مـصـلـحـت نيسـت
A Rumi ghazal of spiritual counsel: separation from companions is not wise, self-centeredness is not wise, poverty when the heavenly table has arrived is not wise. The poem ends in dissolution — be silent, dissolve into the Real.

This ghazal moves through a series of negations — 'is not wise' (na shayad) repeated at the end of each couplet — building a picture of what spiritual intelligence is not. Travel without light, begging after sovereignty, self-centeredness when invited beyond the self: all these are failures of wisdom.
The poem's final instruction — 'Be silent, and dissolve into the ocean of the Real / To play games with divinity is not wise' — frames everything that preceded it. The practical counsel (walk while you have feet, fly when given wings) was always in service of this single act: the dissolution of the self into God.
Rumi's imagery here is specifically aquatic: the 'sea of purity' where the speaker is a fish. In Sufi poetry, the ocean is the divine ground from which individual souls emerged and to which they return; the fish analogy highlights the absurdity of a creature being a stranger to its own element.
