About This Recording
Oh rain, rain — a folk call for rain older than any poem, rooted in the prayers of people whose survival hung on the sky. Zahir strips the prayer of its religion but keeps its urgency: the speaker needs rain the way cracked earth needs it, the way nothing grows without it.
It is his folk-preservationist streak at work, walking into the village tradition without a trace of condescension, recording material the cosmopolitan Kabul of the 1970s might have waved off as too plain, too regional for a star.
