English Translation

If you become my companion, I tell no one — I tell no one If you become my sweetheart and beloved, I tell no one Come, come, my sweetheart — companion dearer than my soul May my head be your sacrifice — I tell no one

If you torment my heart, if you become cruel and tyrannical If you become a faithless companion, or rage at me I tell no one, I tell no one, I tell no one

If you become my companion I tell no one; if you torment my heart, if you become faithless, rage at me — I still tell no one; my head is your sacrifice and the secret stays ours.

About This Recording

Tu Gar Ba Man Yar Shawi — If You Become My Companion — is a poem organized around the pledge of absolute silence. 'I tell no one' (nemi goyam be kasi) functions as both a promise and a condition: the speaker will not share the fact of their relationship with anyone, not even if the beloved mistreats them. The first stanza offers the positive scenario — companionship, becoming sweetheart and beloved — and promises silence. The second stanza offers the negative — torment, cruelty, faithlessness, rage — and promises the same silence.

The symmetry is deliberate and psychologically revealing. The silence is not contingent on how the beloved behaves. It is not a threat withheld ('I could tell, but I won't if you're kind'). It is unconditional. The speaker is not protecting the beloved from social consequences — they are protecting something else: the privacy of the relationship as its own sanctified space. Whatever happens between them stays there, unwitnessed and unconfided.

'May my head be your sacrifice — I tell no one' — the sacrifice formula (sar-fedayat) is the most common of Afghan expressions of devotion, used in everyday life and not merely in poetry. Its placement here, followed immediately by the silence pledge, gives the poem a folksong quality — simple, repetitive, and rooted in a register of speech that Zahir's audiences would have recognized as authentically local rather than imported from classical Persian convention. The poem's power is in its refusal of the ghazal's usual emotional exhibition: the speaker publicly announces a secret they will never tell.
