Tu Ba Mani To Ba Mani

Tu Ba Mani — You Are With Me — is one of the most structurally simple songs in Zahir's output, and its power derives entirely from that simplicity. The refrain 'You are with me, you are with me, you are with me' builds through three repetitions before the contrast: 'O distant, O impossible.' The beloved is simultaneously present (with me, like my soul, like my heart in my body) and absent (distant, impossible, existing only in the world of imagination). This is the central paradox of Zahir's mature love poetry — the beloved lives inside the speaker at the same time as she is unreachable outside.

The phrase 'in the world of imagination' (dar jahan-e tasaw-wor) establishes the zone where the togetherness operates. This is not a delusion being corrected — Zahir does not frame it as false — but an acknowledged inner world that is as real as the outer one. The beloved who is distant and impossible in the external world is genuinely present in the interior one. The song validates both truths simultaneously rather than resolving them.

The second stanza introduces the instrument (saz) as the keeper of the secret: 'The hidden secret of your love lies within my instrument.' At nightfall, in the memory of the absent beloved, the speaker composes a song, and the composition is itself the expression of what cannot otherwise be said. The instrument holds what language cannot contain. This is an unusual move in a ghazal tradition that relies on verbal excess — here, the most important thing is housed in the music itself rather than the words. Zahir the performer singing about the instrument that holds his secret: a layer of self-reference that was surely recognized by live audiences.
