English Translation

O astrologer — take the star of my fortune out of its constellation For I am ill-starred — I fear my sigh will set the sky on fire

Dawn broke and the day came — the beloved left on this pretext O morning bird, may you be lost — the beloved left on this pretext May the morning's face turn black — the beloved left on this pretext

That night after a thousand days, that idol the envy of sun and moon With empty flask in hand came to make amends May the morning's face turn black — the beloved left on this pretext

Dawn broke and the day came — the beloved left on this pretext; may the morning's face turn black; O astrologer, take the star of my ill fortune from its constellation — my sighs will set the sky on fire.

About This Recording

Sobho Damid O Roz Shod — Dawn Broke and the Day Came — is the classical dawn-parting poem (ruba'i-ye sahar) in which dawn, typically celebrated in Persian poetry as blessing and renewal, becomes the enemy. The beloved left 'on this pretext' — using the arrival of morning as cover or excuse — and the speaker's fury is directed at the dawn itself. 'May the morning's face turn black' is a direct curse, inverting the traditional rubai-ye sahar in which the speaker laments that night ends too soon.

The opening address to the astrologer (munajjim) is notable. The speaker does not ask for a prediction but a manipulation: 'take the star of my fortune out of its constellation.' This is a demand to restructure fate rather than read it. The claim that follows — 'I fear my sigh will set the sky on fire' — elevates the speaker's grief to a cosmic threat. The sigh (ah) in classical Persian poetry is not metaphorical; it is understood to carry heat that can literally ignite. The astrologer is thus asked to act before the speaker's suffering damages the celestial order.

The middle stanza introduces the structural irony: the night before dawn, the beloved — 'that idol the envy of sun and moon' — came with an empty flask in hand to make amends. The reconciliation arrived with the night and departed with the dawn. 'May the morning bird be lost' curses the bird that signals dawn and ends the night of reconciliation. The poem is therefore not about a simple abandonment but about the cruelest possible timing: reunited just long enough to make the parting worse.
