Shab Haye Rawshan

Shab Haye Rawshan — Bright Nights — is one of the most quietly beautiful songs in Zahir's catalog: a poem of anticipated intimacy set in the Afghan mountain landscape. The 'bright nights' (shab-haye rawshan) in high-altitude Afghanistan are genuinely spectacular — clear air, no light pollution, the moonlight strong enough to cast shadows. The poem inhabits a landscape its listeners knew from experience.

The duration marker — 'until the wind rises lamenting from the mountain / Until light falls trembling on the water' — establishes how long the two will sit together. Not for a fixed time but until nature intervenes: until the mountain wind begins its lament, until dawn light disturbs the water. The sitting continues as long as the night permits.

'An enchanting voice echoes through the mountain / From afar comes the sound of a shepherd's flute' — the shepherd's flute (nay-e chopan) in Persian lyric tradition is the instrument of longing: the reed cut from its original bed, crying for its origins. Rumi's Masnavi opens with the cry of the reed flute. To hear it from afar, in the mountains, on a bright night, while sitting beside the beloved — this is the context the poem creates, in which grief (the flute's cry) and beauty (the mountain, the moonlight, the company) exist simultaneously.
