Roshani Chashmam

Roshani Chashmam — Light of My Eyes — opens with the most intimate Dari address of endearment: noor-e chashm-am, the light of my eyes. Anatomically, the light of the eye is what allows vision; to be that light for someone is to be the condition of their seeing, not merely something they see. The beloved is not visible to the speaker; the beloved makes visibility possible.

'Without you I cannot / Even for one night be alone with myself and live' — the inability to be alone with oneself is a precise articulation of love's effect. In the beloved's absence, the self becomes intolerable company. The speaker cannot survive the encounter with their own solitude. This is more particular than saying 'I miss you'; it locates the beloved's absence inside the speaker's experience of themselves.

'Your love upon me carries many torments / But union with you carries many secrets' — this couplet appears twice, as refrain and as the song's structural principle. The torments are known and named throughout the song; the secrets are not. Union's secrets remain sealed, unnamed, present only as a possibility. The speaker stood on the road to that union, waiting, which means the secrets have not yet been disclosed. The song ends in that posture: waiting on the road, still unreached.
