Qadah Ra Sar Kunaid
“Drain the Cup”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
Drain the cup — turn the night to dawn Drive the grief of the world out of your head
What is life? The drinking of heart's blood Dying beneath the wall of desire
I was forgotten in your memory The parting road between us opened its arms You left and time aged between us

Drain the cup — turn night to dawn, drive the world's grief from your head. The cup as instrument of transformation: not escape, but the conversion of grief into endurance.
About This Recording
Where Por Kon Pyala Ra is a song of filling, Qadah Ra Sar Kunaid is a song of draining — 'sar kunaid' means to turn upside down, to empty completely. The two imperatives (fill, empty) describe the full cycle of the wine-mystic's practice: the cup must be filled in order to be drained, and the draining is both the act and the point.
'Drain the cup — turn the night to dawn / Drive the grief of the world out of your head' — the cup is not consumed passively but wielded actively, as a tool for converting night to dawn and grief to something other than grief. This is wine not as pleasure but as instrument.
'What is life? The drinking of heart's blood / Dying beneath the wall of desire' — these two lines compress the ghazal tradition's central argument: life is the suffering of love, and the cup simply makes that suffering bearable. The wall of desire is both metaphor and physical fact — something you push against until you stop.
