English Translation

I died from pain and still you do not come to my bedside I see my own death and still I do not see your face

My soul has reached my lips and those I knew have gone from my head I take pride in the candle that still weeps at my bedside

Desire has died, youth has passed, and love has fled from my heart Grief still does not separate from my wretched soul

Transliteration

I died from pain and still you do not come — the speaker watching his own death while the beloved's face remains absent. Youth passed, desire dead, love fled; only grief refuses to leave.

About This Recording

Mordam Az Dard — I Died from Pain — stages an unusual situation: the speaker is dying, or has died, and the beloved has still not appeared. This is the ghazal's logic of absence taken to its terminal point. The beloved's indifference is not broken by death; the speaker's death fails to occasion even a visit.

'My soul has reached my lips' — ruh be lab rasidan, the soul arriving at the lips, is a classical Persian phrase for being at the point of death; the soul is about to depart through the mouth. 'I take pride in the candle that still weeps at my bedside' — the candle weeping (melting, dripping) is a standard image for shared grief, but here only the candle has come to witness.

The final statement carries the song's most compressed grief: 'Desire has died, youth has passed, and love has fled from my heart / Grief still does not separate from my wretched soul.' Everything has departed except the grief. Grief, unlike youth or desire or love, has no reason to leave.
