The Day of My Death Is Near is impossible to hear cleanly, because we already know how the story ends. Whether he meant it as the ghazal's conventional turn toward mortality or as something closer to his own 1979 can't be settled. What's certain is that he recorded it in the months before he was killed on his 33rd birthday.

Persian poetry has always used approaching death to lend urgency to whatever a singer says. Here the urgency isn't borrowed. It's a document from a man who, at some level, seems to have known his time was short — whatever he did or didn't know about the shape it would take.
