Khudat Medani Gule Man

You Know, My Flower addresses the beloved as 'gule man' — my flower — the most common of the Persian lyric tradition's floral endearments. In a tradition that has compared the beloved to every beautiful natural thing, the rose and the flower remain the central comparison: beautiful, fragrant, seasonal, capable of wounding (the thorn).

The 'you know' (khudat medani) that opens the address positions the beloved as someone already aware of what the speaker is about to say — as though the love has been so clearly demonstrated that verbal declaration is almost redundant. And yet the declaration is made, because in the ghazal tradition, love requires the testimony of the voiced word.
