English Translation

May no one ever be in my powerless state Powerless — may no one be May there never be in the world a withered heart like mine In the world — may there never be

A hundred sorrows I have seen from my own kind heart My kind heart God grant — may there never be a kind heart in the world A kind one — may there never be

If my tongue burns like a candle from the burning of love From the burning of love May no word other than love and me ever be on my tongue On my tongue — may it never be

About This Recording

Hargez Kase Ba Roze Mane — May No One Ever Be in My State — is structured as a series of protective curses directed outward: the speaker wishes that no one else experiences what they are experiencing. 'Powerless state,' 'withered heart,' 'a hundred sorrows from one's own kind heart' — these are the conditions the speaker is shielding others from by naming them. The Arabic grammatical structure (may there never be / may no one ever) is a formal blessing inverted into a protective curse.

The cruelest line: 'God grant — may there never be a kind heart in the world.' The speaker's kind heart is what has made them vulnerable. Kindness — openness, generosity, the capacity to feel — is identified as the structural cause of all the suffering. The wish that the world be free of kind hearts is a lament about what kindness costs, delivered with the exhausted irony of someone who would not take their kindness back even while mourning it.

The final stanza turns inward: 'If my tongue burns like a candle from the burning of love / May no word other than love and me ever be on my tongue.' Even in the state of burning, even while wishing others free of this condition, the speaker refuses to give up the subject. Love and the self (man — I) are the only words the burning tongue wants to speak. The curse against suffering and the persistence of the suffering subject exist in the same breath.
