همش درد و همش رنج
Hamash Dardo Hamash Ranj
“All Pain and All Grief”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
All pain and all suffering and all grief This was my share from the world Always sitting in the corner of loneliness Always a branch of hope and breaking
Don't be a child, O heart — forget love So you don't go astray — listen to me Enough burning now — extinguish the flame Forget love
All her words she has forgotten, all affection forgotten All the words of love end in grief It will not come back anymore — my heart is a nest of pain

All pain and all suffering — this was my share from the world; always in the corner of loneliness, always a branch of hope and breaking; the heart told to forget love; but it will not come back — the heart is a nest of pain.
About This Recording
Hamash Dardo Hamash Ranj — All Pain and All Suffering — opens with a statement of cosmic disproportion: the world's share for this particular speaker consists entirely of pain (dard), suffering (ranj), and grief (gham). There is no counterweight. The phrase 'this was my share from the world' (in bood nasibam ze jahan) is a reckoning, a ledger entry — everything the world owed the speaker paid out in these three currencies.
The second stanza delivers advice from the speaker to the heart: 'Don't be a child, O heart — forget love / So you don't go astray — listen to me / Enough burning now — extinguish the flame / Forget love.' The address to the heart as a younger, more impulsive entity is a classic Persian lyric move. The speaker is older and more worn; the heart is still burning. The instruction to extinguish the flame is the most direct anti-love advice in the ghazal tradition — usually the speaker and heart are co-sufferers; here the speaker has briefly separated from the heart to counsel it.
The final stanza overrides the advice entirely: 'All her words she has forgotten, all affection forgotten / All the words of love end in grief / It will not come back anymore — my heart is a nest of pain.' The heart is named as what it has become: not a home for love but a nest of pain. The word nest (ashiana) brings in the bird imagery common in Persian lyric, but here the bird that lives in the nest is not the nightingale but pain itself — the resident rather than the visiting singer.
