English Translation

O moon, show compassion — accept my plea In the embrace of existence — grant me refuge

My failing is great and my love is witness Accept me before this witness of mine

In love you will not accept me — give me to death In tears you will not relent — relent for my sighs

Look at my white hair with affection And then relent from my dark fortune

If you do not wish to open your lips in anger Look at me once — and accept me with your gaze

Rise to help me and take my hand I have erred — accept me still

O moon, show compassion — accept my plea; love is witness; if you will not take me back, give me to death; look at my white hair with affection; accept me with a single gaze.

About This Recording

Gunaham Bebakhsh — Forgive My Failing — is the most structurally complete petition in Zahir's catalog: a formal supplication in which every available form of appeal is tried, one by one, across six couplets. The beloved is addressed as the moon — a classical Persian image of beauty, radiance, and serene power — and implored for the compassion and acceptance that the speaker cannot find anywhere else.

The progression of appeals is methodical: first the general request, then the argument from love as witness, then the alternative (if you will not accept me in love, give me to death — which amounts to saying death is preferable to rejection), then the appeal from old age ('look at my white hair'), then the appeal from fortune, and finally the most minimal appeal: 'Look at me once — and accept me with your gaze.'

The final appeal — acceptance through a single gaze — is the most stripped-down of all the requests. No speech required, no formal gesture; just one look. The beloved's gaze is portrayed as having the power to transform and restore. The white hair in the penultimate couplet adds an autobiographical pathos: an older speaker, having stumbled and been left behind, asking for one last chance before it is too late.
