Gar Kuni Yak Nizara — If You Cast One Glance — is Ahmad Zahir's first recorded song, made in the early years of his career when he was still identified primarily as the bandleader of the Amatorha-I-Lycee Habibia ensemble. The recording announces what would become his signature approach: a willingness to borrow from everywhere and treat the result as natural.
The arrangement incorporates the melodic language of the Indian raga tradition within a pop song structure — a fusion that was genuinely unusual in the Kabul of the early 1960s. Afghan music had long existed in dialogue with South Asian traditions through shared cultural history, but the specific integration of raga modal frameworks with Western pop rhythm and chord structure was Zahir's own synthesis.
