Hafiz's famous poem: last night the elder — the spiritual guide — left the mosque and went to the tavern. What now do we disciples do? A radical critique of institutional religion's authority.
About This Recording
In Sufi orders, the pir (master, elder) was the living connection between student and the divine. The disciple did not approach God directly but through the pir's guidance and example. When the pir leaves the mosque for the tavern, the entire architecture of that guidance becomes uncertain.
Hafiz's question — 'What is it, O friends of the path — what is our plan henceforth?' — is not a complaint. It is a liberation. The pir's apostasy, or apparent apostasy, removes the external authority and forces each disciple to find their own way. This is consistent with Hafiz's larger project: the critique of religion as social performance, and the defense of wine and love as more authentic paths.
Zahir placed this among his recordings of classical Hafiz alongside pieces like Haasha Ke Man Ba Mowsum and Tu Dani Tu Ze Chi Jawhar — building across his catalog a body of Hafiz interpretations that brought the poet's subversive theology to a popular audience.
Poetic Source & Adaptation
One of Hafiz's most scandalous ghazals. The 'elder' (pir) or spiritual guide's authority rested on his position between the disciple and God — if the pir has abandoned the mosque for the tavern, the entire religious hierarchy collapses. 'The wise would go mad for the sake of our chain' — wisdom itself becoming inadequate in the face of love's logic.
