English Translation

In the desert's lap, unaware of the world The song of existence was being sung into my ear One who does not bind their heart to the pattern of time Loves the melody of love and the heart's desire

This heavenly melody I tell you, if you do not know: The eternal secret of love

From your innocence I am drowned in sin I am thirsty for pain — I want your love How sweet it was, O delicate flower, to be close to you At the price of one's life to see your moon-like face

In the desert's lap, unaware of the world — the song of existence sung into the ear; one who does not bind their heart to time loves the melody of love; drowned in sin from your innocence, thirsty for pain, wanting your love.

About This Recording

Dar Damane Sahra — In the Desert's Lap — is Ahmad Zahir at his most philosophically expansive: the desert (sahra) as a space of revelation rather than deprivation. To be 'unaware of the world' in the desert is not ignorance but a different kind of knowing — the world of social codes and obligations falls away, and what remains is the song of existence (sarod-e hasti) whispered directly into the ear.

'One who does not bind their heart to the pattern of time / Loves the melody of love and the heart's desire' — this is a compressed statement of the Sufi position: detachment from the patterns that time imposes (aging, loss, obligation) frees the heart for love's particular music. The desert's lawlessness — it has no patterns of time — is what makes it spiritually hospitable.

The final stanzas shift from the philosophical to the personal: 'From your innocence I am drowned in sin / I am thirsty for pain — I want your love.' The beloved's innocence produces the speaker's sin — the familiar ghazal paradox that presence of beauty is itself the cause of transgression. 'Thirsty for pain' is one of Zahir's more precise formulations: not accepting pain reluctantly but seeking it, because the pain is the form the beloved's love takes in the speaker's experience.
