English Translation

How madly I wander from the grief of separation I am not to blame — the beloved weighs heavy upon me

My collar is wet with tears from so much grief On the highway I sit in longing for my beloved

When will you come, O beloved — this is my longing I am not to blame — the beloved weighs heavy upon me

In the pure love of my beloved I was fresh Intoxicated beyond measure by the wine of those rosy lips

When the beloved parted from me my state became hard I am not to blame — the beloved weighs heavy upon me

How madly I wander from the grief of separation — I am not to blame, the beloved weighs heavy upon me; my collar wet with tears; in the pure love of my beloved I was fresh, now my state has become hard.

About This Recording

Che Lewanay Garzoma Gham is a Pashto-language song from Ahmad Zahir's folk preservation repertoire — one of the songs where he crossed linguistic registers to record in Afghanistan's other major language. The Pashto 'lewanay' (mad, crazy) gives the wandering its specific character: not lost but mad from grief, which is a different kind of displacement.

The refrain 'I am not to blame — the beloved weighs heavy upon me' (za gunahgar neyam — yara zama tor sho) is a defense that acknowledges the behavior without accepting moral responsibility for it. The madness, the wandering, the collar wet with tears — all of these are effects of the weight the beloved places on the speaker. The beloved is a gravitational force, not a person one can reason with.

'In the pure love of my beloved I was fresh / Intoxicated beyond measure by the wine of those rosy lips' — the song carries a before/after structure. Before the parting the speaker was fresh (taza, alive, vigorous); after the parting the state became 'hard' (sakht — difficult, painful, firm against softness). The contrast between freshness and hardness mirrors the natural contrast between a living branch and a dried one.
