English Translation

What wrong came from us that you locked the door You sat with enemies and broke the hearts of friends

From your eyes instead of kohl, sleep pours From your ruby lips instead of laughter, wine pours You are more bloomed than the blossom of the sun From every glance of yours a hundred suns pour

I broke my shoulder on the pretense of transgression So the ringlets of your hair could not reach out their hands

Transliteration

What wrong came from us that you locked the door and sat with enemies? A poem of wounded innocence, where the beloved's cruelty transforms even her physical attributes — kohl, lips, gaze — into sources of bewilderment.

About This Recording

The poem's central question — 'what wrong came from us that you locked the door?' — establishes a posture of innocence that never quite convinces. In Persian ghazal tradition, the lover's guilt is usually assumed; to protest innocence is itself a subtle form of complaint. 'You sat with enemies and broke the hearts of friends' tells us something about a social world where the beloved's loyalties had consequences beyond the personal.

'From your eyes instead of kohl, sleep pours' — kohl (surma) is the eyeliner worn traditionally in Kabul and across the region, and 'sleep pours from the eyes' is an image of intoxication, of heavy-lidded languor that overwhelms the formal cosmetic function. 'From your ruby lips instead of laughter, wine pours' — the mouth yields wine rather than speech. The beloved's body overflows with luxury and intoxication regardless of what her heart is doing.

'I broke my shoulder on the pretense of transgression / So the ringlets of your hair could not reach out their hands' — the phrase accepts blame for a sin that may be imagined rather than real. 'The ringlets of hair reaching out their hands' is a Hafizian image — hair as seductive snares that reach across the distance the quarrel has created. Even in protestation, the beloved's hold reasserts itself.
