بمان ای شب که تاريکی و بيداری دلم خواهد برو ای مه که اندوه شب تاری دلم خواهد
برنجان و بنالانم، بگريان و بسوزانم که سوز و اشک و آه و ناله و زاری دلم خواهد
Stay, O night — the speaker asks darkness to remain, tells the moon to go away. Grief desires its own proper setting: night, wakefulness, the space to burn and mourn without dawn interrupting.
About This Recording
Beman Aye Shab inverts the usual desire in Persian love poetry, where dawn (sahar) is dreaded because it ends the night of union with the beloved. Here the speaker has no union to protect — the grief itself requires night's shelter.
'Go away, O moon — my heart desires the grief of the dark night.' The moon, which in much Persian poetry is the beloved's face, is here an unwanted intruder: its light is incompatible with the quality of darkness the speaker needs to inhabit grief properly.
The request to 'wound me and make me moan, make me weep and burn' asks the night to do what the beloved did — inflict the precise suffering that love inflicts. In the ghazal tradition, grief is not simply an aftermath of love but its continuation by other means.
