English Translation

The spring of my youth has gone — alas The joy of life has come to its end — alas My happiness, like an eagle, has taken flight And soared toward the heavens — alas

O beautiful bird, come to me, come You are the sun of my life The light in my eyes has grown dim and dark My broken heart waits for you This heart has always been your consoler Though your flight takes you elsewhere Return — bring joy to this grief-stricken heart

All my hopes remain in my heart, undying I know this life that has passed is nothing but a pattern of regret

An elegy for lost youth — the spring of one's young years gone, happiness taken flight like an eagle. The classical Persian theme of time's passage and the fleeting nature of life's beauty.

About This Recording

The spring of youth as a season that ends is one of Persian poetry's oldest preoccupations. From Omar Khayyam's quatrains to the Sufi poets, the brevity of youth is not simply a sentimental subject but an argument: that one must live fully because the window is short.

The eagle image — 'my happiness, like an eagle, has taken flight and soared toward the heavens' — carries the speed and altitude of something beyond retrieval. Eagles in Persian poetic imagery are associated with royalty, power, and unreachable heights. Happiness departing upward, not downward, is a specific grief.

Zahir recorded this at a time in his career when the theme was not yet autobiographical — youth was still present. Listeners who came to it after his death at thirty-three found in the lyric an uncanny accuracy, a man singing about loss that was still ahead of him.
