Az An Roz Ke Payman

Az An Roz Ke Payman — Since the Day I Made a Covenant — is a song of radical exclusivity: the speaker's loyalty to the beloved is expressed not through addition but through subtraction. Every other commitment, every other covenant, every other beautiful face has been abandoned. 'I have broken two hundred other covenants' is the proof of this one's depth.

The word payman (covenant, pledge) appears in different registers through the poem. The explicit covenant made with the beloved is the founding act; the two hundred broken covenants are the evidence of what that founding act cost. The final stanza's 'another kind of pledge' is deliberately ambiguous — it suggests that the speaker has broken not just promises to people but commitments to principles, to the kinds of pleasures (cup and goblet) that belonged to an earlier version of the self.

The structure of the poem is a confession willingly offered. The speaker names all the betrayals, not to apologize for them but to inventory them as evidence of love's scale. Each broken covenant to the world is a bond reinforced with the beloved. Ahmad Zahir's performance gives the repeated refrain — 'since the day I made a covenant with you, I have broken two hundred other covenants' — the quality of a fact stated simply, without drama, because the speaker has made his peace with what it cost.
