The song never addresses the beloved. It addresses whoever might carry word of her — the messenger, that essential go-between of Persian love poetry, the one who ferries news across the distance. Zahir makes it feel less like a literary device than like a voice calling out to anyone at all who might have heard something, the urgency of a person who has waited too long for news that hasn't come.
