ای بت بیرحم
Aye Bot Be Rahm
“O Merciless Idol”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
O merciless idol — make me your prey! Throw a lasso around my neck
Shoot an arrow — I will take it from the air And place it within my chest
I will make a place for your arrow in my heart and soul To bring solace to this enamored heart
Your seductive eye that casts its spell Drowns this little heart of mine in blood
Those ruby lips that tell a hundred tales into my ear
O soul of mine — do not go before rivals Do not go alone to the rose garden
Come to me that I may be your sacrifice Slain by a single glance of yours

Ay bote berahem shekar afganam Reshta beyandaz tu dar gardanam
Tir beyandaz ke man az hawa Geram o dar seena konam jabaja
Ter tura dar dil o jan jah deham Ta tasaliye dil shayda deham
Chashm fatanat ke fesoon mekonad Ein dilakam gharqaye khoon mekonad
An labe lalat ke ze maykhanaha Mega ba gosham dosad afsanaha
Jan mani peshe raqiban maraw Yaka o tanha ba gulestan maraw
Peshe man ah ta ke fedayat shawam Koshtaye yak lahzah neghahat shawam
O merciless idol — make me your prey, throw a lasso, shoot an arrow I will place within my chest; your seductive eye drowns my heart in blood; come that I may be your sacrifice, slain by a single glance.
About This Recording
Aye Bot Be Rahm — O Merciless Idol — is a song of aggressive supplication: the speaker does not plead for gentleness but for the beloved's violence. 'Make me your prey, throw a lasso around my neck, shoot an arrow — I will take it from the air and place it within my chest.' The offer to catch the arrow and self-administer the wound is the ghazal tradition's extreme form of devotion: the lover so eager for the beloved's attention that they will participate in their own destruction.
The 'bot' (idol) is the standard term for the beloved in Persian lyric, with roots in pre-Islamic imagery of the beautiful figure before whom one prostrates. 'Merciless' (be rahm) is here an amplification of desire rather than a complaint — the speaker wants an idol who will be demanding, who will claim the lover as prey rather than treat him with indifference.
The visual arsenal — seductive eyes, ruby lips, a glance — runs through the poem in the standard taxonomy of the beloved's weapons. But the final couplet's 'come to me that I may be your sacrifice / slain by a single glance' turns the initiative back to the beloved: the speaker is ready, the sacrifice is prepared, the execution requires only the beloved to arrive. The single glance sufficient for death is one of the ghazal tradition's most efficient images of overwhelming beauty.
