My tears fall like drops of rain before my beloved; I have complaints no intimate can hear; on the day of resurrection I will grasp the hem of your robe and demand the answer you never gave.

About This Recording

The rain simile for tears (ashk-haye man hamcho qatra-ye baran) is common but the modifier 'before my beloved' makes it specific — the rain does not fall in private but in the beloved's presence, as if even weeping is an act performed for an audience of one who does not respond.

The second stanza's isolation — 'I have many complaints, to whom shall I tell them? / Alas, I have no intimate one to confide in' — establishes that the beloved is not just the cause of the speaker's grief but the only possible addressee, and is unavailable. The absence of a mahram (intimate, trusted confidant) is a social and emotional condition that the beloved's indifference has created.

The third stanza shifts the frame to eschatology — the Day of Resurrection (ruz-e qiyamat) when all accounts are settled. The gesture of grasping the daman (hem of the robe) is one of appeal and supplication in Islamic legal and moral tradition: you hold the garment of someone who owes you something and do not release them until the debt is acknowledged. The speaker projects the entire love complaint forward to its only possible resolution: divine judgment, with the beloved as defendant.
