English Translation

My eyes' enchantment has led you astray from the path — and I know it Why do you vainly say: my heart is hard as iron?

You do not know, you do not know — that beside my enchanting eye In this cup of lips, I carry a wine that fells men

Why do you vainly strive to flee from my embrace? You will never find a warmer embrace than this burning one

Are you not afraid — that they will inscribe your name On the dark stone of a sorrowful grave?

My eyes' enchantment has led you astray — why do you claim your heart is hard as iron? In this cup of lips I carry a wine that fells men; you will never find a warmer embrace; do not stray — the dark stone of a sorrowful grave awaits.

About This Recording

Tura Afsoon Chashmanam — My Eyes' Enchantment Has Led You Astray — is the rarest type of song in Zahir's catalog: the speaker is the enchanter, the beloved is the one being led astray. In the vast majority of Zahir's love poetry, the speaker is the one entrapped, bewildered, and wounded by the beloved's power. Here the positions are reversed, and the speaker occupies the role of the powerful one, directly addressing someone who is trying — and failing — to resist them.

'Why do you vainly say: my heart is hard as iron?' — the 'you' being addressed is someone claiming immunity, resistance to being affected. The speaker reads through this claim and declares it false: my eyes' enchantment has already led you astray, and I know it. The knowledge is significant. The speaker is not guessing at the beloved's hidden feelings but asserting certainty. 'In this cup of lips, I carry a wine that fells men' — the lips as a cup containing intoxicating wine is a standard classical image, but here it is deployed as a threat/promise: this is a weapon you cannot withstand.

'Are you not afraid — that they will inscribe your name / On the dark stone of a sorrowful grave?' is the poem's most unusual line. The threat is that the beloved, by resisting the speaker's enchantment and thereby refusing the warmth of the embrace offered, will die of their own sorrow. It is a warning about the consequences of their own stubbornness rather than a threat of external harm. The dark stone of a sorrowful grave (sang-e siyah) awaits those who deny themselves the warmth they could have had. This inversion — the speaker as the warm-embrace provider, the beloved as the cold-resistance sufferer — gives the poem an unusual erotic authority that distinguishes it sharply from Zahir's characteristic suppliant register.
