From so much calling upon God in your memory every night, I raised a resurrection in the court of God; in your memory I fell and laid my head on grief's knee like an orphan; you are still my breath, my life, my every moment.
About This Recording
Tu Hamchnan Nafas Man Hayat — You Are Still My Breath, My Life — opens with an act that is theologically significant: the speaker calls upon God (khuda ra mekhwanam) in the beloved's memory, not in petition for reunion or relief, but simply in the intensity of the memory itself. The repetition of this act every night accumulates until 'I raised a resurrection in the court of God' — meaning the volume and intensity of the nighttime supplications became so great that they constituted a kind of judgment-day commotion. This is hyperbole in the classical mode: the lover's grief disturbing the divine court.
The second stanza — 'In the memory of your skirt I fell and like an orphan child / I laid my head on the knee of grief and wept' — shifts to a more intimate scale. The 'memory of your skirt' (yade damanay-e to) is a physical detail, the hem of a garment belonging to the beloved, and the fall triggered by this memory reduces the speaker to a child's posture: head on the knee of grief (not the beloved's knee but grief's — grief here is personified as the one who receives and holds). The orphan comparison is precise: the orphan has no parent's knee available and makes do with what the world provides.
The closing — 'You are still my breath, my life / You are still my every moment' — abandons the dramatic imagery for the simplest possible declaration. After the resurrection-raising and the orphan grief, the poem ends in a statement of basic fact about the speaker's condition. The word 'still' (hamchnan, 'as before, still, yet') is the crucial word: time has passed, the beloved is absent, the speaker has been through all of what the poem describes — and still the condition is unchanged. The constancy is the poem's subject.
