English Translation

Repentance, repentance — repentance from the night of separation From weeping eyes, from a ruined heart From the cruelty of the beautiful, from the pain of longing — repentance

Of the burning and pain of separation, O counselor, you know nothing You have not seen the wound of love — no ember burns in your heart You have not had blood in your liver from someone's separation

Love was day and night — bearing cruelty and oppression Go, go — you have not seen it, rolling in mud and blood Where was hearing, O counselor — like seeing with the eyes

Repentance, repentance from the night of separation — from weeping eyes, ruined heart, cruelty of the beautiful; the counselor knows nothing of this burning; love was day and night, rolling in mud and blood — where was hearing, like seeing with the eyes.

About This Recording

Toba Toba Az Shabe Hijran — Repentance, Repentance from the Night of Separation — is structured as a direct refusal of moral counsel. The speaker opens by cataloging what they repent of: the night of separation, the weeping eyes, the ruined heart, the cruelty of the beautiful, the pain of longing. This is not theological repentance (toba in the sense of turning back to God) but a renunciation addressed to the conditions of love itself — a declaration that this much suffering is too much to bear again.

The second stanza pivots into a fierce rejection of the counselor (nasih), a stock figure in classical Persian poetry who advises the lover to abandon love and return to rational conduct. The speaker's counter is experiential rather than philosophical: 'You have not seen the wound of love — no ember burns in your heart / You have not had blood in your liver from someone's separation.' The counselor's ignorance is presented as disqualifying — advice without experience is noise. This is one of the oldest arguments in Persian poetry, from Rumi to Hafiz to Bedil, and Zahir deploys it with the speed of a refrain.

'Love was day and night — bearing cruelty and oppression / Go, go — you have not seen it, rolling in mud and blood' — the accumulation of 'day and night,' 'cruelty and oppression,' 'mud and blood' builds to the dismissal 'Go, go' (boro, boro), a colloquial Afghan Dari exclamation of impatience. The final line — 'Where was hearing, O counselor — like seeing with the eyes' — is an epistemological claim: hearing advice about love is nothing like the direct experience of it, just as hearing about vision is nothing like sight. The counselor is structurally excluded from the conversation.
