“Only You, Only You”
Only You, Only You — the radical exclusivity of the ghazal's love, the beloved named as the singular fact of a life from which all other possibilities have been excluded.
About This Recording
Only You, Only You builds its emotional logic through repetition: the declaration is not sufficient stated once. The doubling of 'tanha toye' — only you, only you — enacts the exclusive devotion it describes. In the Persian lyric tradition, the exclusive declaration is always slightly excessive, always aware that it is exceeding what can be proven — and that excess is the point.
The recording belongs to the period of Zahir's mature golden-era sound — 1977, by which time his arrangements had settled into their characteristic warmth and the voice had acquired the authority that comes from years of live performance. It is a recording that knows what it is doing and does it without hesitation.
