Shabe Ze Shabha
“A Night Among Nights”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
One night of nights, you and I alone At the wave of the sea, gazing raptly You, beautiful one — O dark-lashed eyes I, with longing — without pain and longing
That night when you left — what did you see? You broke my heart, you cut yourself from me Where did you go, O enchanting-eyed one? You fled from me like a gazelle — where?
Another night — I and my heart and my grief At the foot of flowers, we told our tales How many nights sick and alone I raised a lament and wept

One night of nights, you and I alone at the sea's wave, gazing raptly — you left, broke my heart, fled like a gazelle; another night: I and my heart and my grief, at the foot of flowers, told our tales — how many nights sick and alone.
About This Recording
Shabe Ze Shabha — One Night of Nights — is a triptych: the remembered night of intimacy, the departure that ended it, and the current night of solitude. The opening 'one night of nights' (shabe ze shabha) is the Persian superlative structure, identifying this particular night as exceptional among all nights — the night of nights, the one that matters in retrospect because of what it preceded.
'You, beautiful one — O dark-lashed eyes / I, with longing — without pain and longing' — the self-description 'without pain and longing' is the key detail. That night, the speaker was free of the conditions that now define them. The presence of the beloved temporarily suspended the speaker's habitual longing. Loss of what one no longer has is painful; this poem captures the additional pain of having been free from pain and then losing that freedom.
The third stanza — 'Another night — I and my heart and my grief / At the foot of flowers, we told our tales / How many nights sick and alone / I raised a lament and wept' — is the present moment. Three entities (the speaker, the heart, and grief) occupy the place where two people once sat. The company of one's own grief beside flowers is the poem's darkest image: beauty in the surroundings, misery in the company, the lament raised as the night's concluding activity.
