English Translation

You go hidden like a soul within my soul You are the swaying cypress — the glory of my garden

Do not go without me — O soul of the soul, go not without body Do not go out of my sight — O shining flame of mine

Through seven heavens I will scatter, through seven seas I will pass When you look with coquetry into my wandering soul

Through your grace I became like a soul and hid from myself O you who are hidden — revealing yourself

You go hidden like a soul within my soul — you are the swaying cypress, the glory of my garden; do not go without me, O soul of the soul; through your grace I became like a soul and hid from myself — O hidden one, revealing yourself.

About This Recording

Poshida Choon Jan Mirawi — You Go Hidden Like a Soul — describes a beloved whose presence is interior and invisible. 'Hidden like a soul within my soul' — the beloved is not outside the speaker to be approached or seen but inside, the way the soul is inside the body: present as a condition of existence rather than as an observable object. To lose the beloved would be to lose the inner organizing principle of the self.

'Do not go without me — O soul of the soul, go not without body' — the soul of the soul (jan-e jan) is the innermost core of vitality. The complaint 'go not without body' reverses the usual spiritual hierarchy: normally the soul is considered more essential than the body and might depart from it; here the beloved-soul is being asked not to leave the speaker-body. The body is making a claim on the soul's loyalty.

'Through your grace I became like a soul and hid from myself / O you who are hidden — revealing yourself' — the final couplet reaches the Sufi paradox: through the beloved's grace the speaker has become transparent to themselves, has hidden from the self that would ordinarily be the subject of experience. And the beloved, who was hidden, is now the one revealed — the source of light that the speaker's own dissolution has made visible. The poem ends at a place of complete mutual permeation.
