Treat all the righteous from beginning to end with the wine of Kawthar On condition they do not take this cup from my hand
Until my cup stays whole from the stone of calamity For a good cause — a thousand repentances I have broken
As I stand helpless before your beauty It has become clear to the whole world that I am captive to your radiance

Negha kon ke narezad, dehe cho bada badastam Fedaye chashme tu saqi, bahosh bash ke mastam
Konam maleja yaksar ba salehan may kawsar Basharte anke nagirand ein peyala ze dastam
Ze sang hadesa ta sagharam drost bemand Boja khair o tasadoq, hazar toba shekastam
Chonin ke sajda baram be hefaz pesh jamalat Baalami shoda roshanke aftab parastam
Kamand zolf base gardanam bebast ba moye Chenad feshord ke zanjeer sad alaqa gosestam
Na shaikh medehadam toba o na pir maghan may Ze bas ke tuba namodam, ze bas ke tuba shekastam
Ze gerya akheram ein shod natija dar paye zolfash Ke dar myane do daryae khon fetada neshastam
Ze qamatat che gereftam qeyas roze qeyamat Nestast o goft qeyamat baqamatest ke hastam
Nadasht khateram andisha paye ze roze qeyamat Zamanad dad ba dast shab ferq tu dastam
Bekhez az bare man, ke az khoda o khalq, reqabat Bas ast keyfar ein yak nafas ke ba tu neshastam
Haram gasht ba yaghma behesht to, roze Ke dil ba gandam adam fereb to bastam

نگاه کن که نريزد، دهی چو باده بدستم فدای چشم تو ساقی، بهوش باش که مستم
کنم معالجه يکسر به صالحان می کوثر بشرط آنکه نگيرند اين پياله ز دستم
ز سنگ حادثه تا ساغرم درست بماند بوجه خير و تصدق، هزار توبه شکستم
چنين که سجده برم بی حفاظ پيش جمالت بعالمی شده روشن که آفتاب پرستم
کمند زلف بسی گردنم ببست به مويی چنان فشرد که زنجير صد علاقه گسستم
نه شيخ ميدهدم توبه و نه پير مغان می ز بس که توبه نمودم، زبس که توبه شکستم
ز گريه آخرم اين شد نتيجه در پی زلفش که در ميان دو دريای خون فتاده نشستم
ز قامتت چه گرفتم قياس روز قيامت نشست و گفت قيامت بقامتيست که هستم
نداشت خاطرم انديشه يی ز روز قيامت زمانه داد به دست شب فراق تو، دستم
بخيز از بر من، که از خدا و خلق، رقابت بس است کيفر اين يک نفس که با تو نشستم
حرام گشت به يغما بهشت تو، روزی که دل به گندم آدم فريب تو بستم
Watch so the wine does not spill — I sacrifice for your eyes, O cupbearer; treat the righteous with wine of Kawthar on condition they don't take my cup; a thousand repentances broken for a good cause; I stand helpless before your beauty — the world sees I am captive to your radiance.
About This Recording
Negah Kon Negah Kon — Watch, Watch — addresses the cupbearer (saqi) with careful instructions: watch when pouring, don't let the wine spill, I am drunk and unsteady. The opening is almost comic in its practical specificity — the drunkard's earnest warning to the one pouring. But the cup is also the receptacle of mystical knowledge in Sufi poetry, and the care about spillage is care about waste of something precious.
The Kawthar reference — 'treat all the righteous from beginning to end with the wine of Kawthar / On condition they do not take this cup from my hand' — invokes the Quranic river of paradise (Sura Al-Kawthar, 108) whose water is sweeter than honey. To ask that the righteous be served Kawthar while demanding that this particular cup not be taken from one's own hand is to acknowledge the distinction between the righteous and the speaker — and to choose the speaker's cup anyway.
'As I stand helpless before your beauty / It has become clear to the whole world that I am captive to your radiance' — the speaker's helplessness before beauty is the poem's final confession, and it is a public one: the whole world can see the condition. 'Captive to your radiance' names the state precisely — not madness, not shame, but a captivity that the speaker has made no effort to escape. The 'thousand repentances broken' for a good cause locates the speaker in the classical tradition of the love-drunk who knows sobriety's rules and sets them aside when beauty appears.
