نه دل مفتون دلبنده
Na Dil Maftoon Dilbande
“My Heart Is Not Captivated”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
Neither is my heart captivated by a beloved, nor my soul dazed by a desired one Neither a tear on my eyelashes, nor a sigh on my lips
My gathering finds no warmth — neither from a candle nor a crowd My memory holds no attachment — neither to a love nor to a moon
Who am I? A wanderer with lost desire, alone and bewildered Neither peace, nor hope, nor sympathy, nor companionship
Transliteration
Na dil maftoon dilbande na jan madhoshe dilkhwahe Na bar mezhgane man ashke na bar labhaye man aahe

Keyam man arezo gum kardaye tanha o sargardan Na aarame na omide na hamdarde na hamrahe
Rahe ta chand sozam dar dil shabha cho kawkabha Ba iqbale sharar nazam ke darad omre kotahe
Neither is my heart captivated nor my soul dazed — neither a tear nor a sigh; my gathering finds no warmth from candle or crowd; my memory holds no attachment; I am a wanderer with lost desire, alone.
About This Recording
Na Dil Maftoon Dilbande — Neither Is My Heart Captivated — is the catalog's most striking anomaly: a song about the absence of love's effects rather than their presence. Every other song in the Persian lyric tradition describes the devastation of being in love; this one describes the strange desolation of being outside it. No captivation, no tears, no sighs — and somehow this is worse.
The gathering that 'finds no warmth — neither from a candle nor a crowd' is the social correlative of emotional numbness. The candle (the beloved's face, the source of light in the mahfil) and the crowd (company, human contact) both fail to generate warmth. The speaker is present in the world's usual warmth-providing situations and none of them reach them.
'Who am I? A wanderer with lost desire, alone and bewildered / Neither peace, nor hope, nor sympathy, nor companionship' — the catalog of negatives at the end is exhaustive. Desire (hawa) is lost; peace (qarar), hope (omid), sympathy (hamdradi), companionship (rafaqat) are all absent. The question 'who am I?' asked by someone in this condition is genuine: without desire and without the social bonds that ordinarily define a person, identity itself becomes uncertain. This is the most existentially stripped song in Zahir's catalog.
