A song greeting the republic — the patriots' Eid, the people's hope. Recorded in the era of Daoud Khan's 1973 republic, the word 'republic' became bitterly ironic after 1978's communist coup claimed the same name.
About This Recording
Jamhuriyat means 'republic' — the political form that Mohammad Daoud Khan established in 1973 when he overthrew the constitutional monarchy of his cousin Zahir Shah. The republic Daoud created was secular, nationalist, and modernizing; and initially many in Kabul, including artists and intellectuals, received it with cautious hope. This song appears to be a product of that moment.
The language is celebratory: 'the patriots took that dawn as the Eid of the republic,' 'the people carried hope in the republic like flowers.' But the word 'republic' did not belong to Daoud alone. When the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan overthrew Daoud in the Saur Revolution of April 1978 and established what it called the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, the same word — jamhuriyat — attached itself to something entirely different.
Ahmad Zahir's name was on the new government's blacklist. A song celebrating the republic, recorded under the old republic, became a complicated object under the communist one. Zahir was dead within fourteen months of the coup.
