گنگ شوی یار
Gunga Shawi Yar
“You Have Become Silent, My Friend”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
You show us so much coquetry — may you go silent, beloved May you go silent with so much talking
On the road of love, what longing — on the road of love, what longing The longing is this: that you become my companion, O helpless one May you go silent, beloved — may you go silent with so much talking
That tulip-faced one stole my heart — that tulip-faced one stole my heart My heart has become much the prisoner of your gaze

You show so much coquetry — may you go silent, beloved; on the road of love the longing is to become companions; that tulip-faced one stole my heart and made it prisoner of your gaze.
About This Recording
Gunga Shawi Yar — May You Go Silent, Beloved — is a folk-register song in which the request to stop talking (gunga shawi — may you go silent/mute) is paradoxically an expression of desire. The beloved's coquetry involves so much speech and display that the speaker is overwhelmed; the request for silence is a request for the beloved to be simply present rather than performing.
The longing named on the road of love — 'that you become my companion' — is one of the most modest longings in Zahir's catalog. Not union, not kiss, not the beloved's body; simply companionship. 'May you go silent' and 'become my companion' are the same request: stop performing, and just be here with me.
The 'tulip-faced one' (lala-roye) is a specific Persian compliment — the tulip's red color and upright, open-faced quality suggest directness and vivid beauty. That the tulip-faced one 'stole my heart' is a standard folk trope; what gives the couplet its energy is the immediacy of the repetition and the precision of the final image: not just stolen but held, the heart made a prisoner of the gaze. The capture is complete and the prisoner does not resist.
