The wheat was harvested and my beloved did not come. The uncut wheat remained and still she did not come. A folk song of agricultural time and unfulfilled promise.

About This Recording

The wheat harvest (daraw) marks one of the year's defining moments in Afghan agricultural life — a deadline imposed by the season, after which the grain must be in. The poem uses this fixed point twice, as a before and after: the wheat was cut (the task done) and still she did not come; the uncut wheat remained (the task unfinished) and still she did not come. Whether the wheat is harvested or not makes no difference to the beloved's absence.

The repetition of the couplet is characteristic of folk song form. Where the classical ghazal accumulates meaning through a sequence of different images, the folk lyric often rests in one image repeated — making the listener inhabit the same feeling from the same angle until it becomes a kind of endurance.

Ahmad Zahir recorded a number of pieces that draw from the folk tradition rather than the classical ghazal, and these songs served a different function in his catalog: they connected him to village and rural audiences rather than the urban educated class that would primarily recognize the Hafiz and Rumi quotations. The wheat harvest was a lived reality for the majority of Afghans who heard him on Radio Afghanistan.
