دور از تو هر شب
Dor Az Tu Har Shab
“Every Night Far from You”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
Far from you every night until dawn I weep like the candle of the gathering Whatever may be the outcome of this fruitless weeping
Brimful of tears is the cup — where is the cup? That fire-colored water? Where is that remedy of tranquility to solve my difficulty?
Like a shadow far from your face I have fallen in your lane My hopeful eyes toward you — alas for my futile hope
In love and intoxication I have given my being and nonbeing O cupbearer of the drunk — am I mad or heedless?

Far from you every night until dawn I weep like the candle of the gathering; the cup brimful of tears; like a shadow I have fallen in your lane, hopeful eyes toward you — alas for my futile hope.
About This Recording
Dor Az Tu Har Shab — Far from You Every Night — opens with the candle of the gathering (sham-e bazm): the candle placed at the center of a social occasion that weeps through the night as it burns. The candle weeps not because it grieves but because burning is its condition. The speaker weeps in the same way — not as performance but as the natural process of a being consumed by the condition of far-ness.
'Brimful of tears is the cup — where is the cup? That fire-colored water?' — the cup is full of tears rather than wine, and the fire-color of wine (atesheet) is transposed onto the tears. Wine and tears have traded qualities: the tears have the color of fire; the cup holds grief instead of joy. 'Where is that remedy of tranquility' — the irony is that the remedy (dawa) would itself be the wine that is now replaced by tears.
'Like a shadow far from your face I have fallen in your lane / My hopeful eyes toward you — alas for my futile hope' — the shadow cast by the beloved's face has fallen in the lane near the beloved's home. The speaker is present in the lane as a shadow-presence, eyes still toward the beloved. 'Alas for my futile hope' — the hope is named futile by the speaker while it is still being held. The awareness of futility does not end the hope; the two coexist.
