I Will Not Stop Seeking

English Translation

I will not withdraw my hand from seeking until my desire is achieved Either the soul reaches the beloved or the soul leaves the body

From longing for her mouth my soul has grown tight When does the tight-fisted one's mouth grant satisfaction from that mouth?

Open my grave after death and look: From the fire within me, smoke rises from my shroud

I will not withdraw my hand from seeking until my desire is achieved Either the soul reaches the beloved or the soul leaves the body

Transliteration

One of Hafiz's most determined ghazals: I will not stop seeking until I achieve my desire or die. After death, open my grave — smoke rises from the fire still burning inside.

About This Recording

This is one of Hafiz's most structurally resolved ghazals: an opening vow, a body of suffering, and a return to the vow unchanged. The speaker's desire has not been achieved; and the poem makes clear it will not relax its demand regardless. 'Either the soul reaches the beloved or the soul leaves the body' — these are the only two acceptable outcomes.

The grave image earns its place: 'Open my grave after death and look: / From the fire within me, smoke rises from my shroud.' In Hafiz's worldview, the fire of love is not a metaphor that expires when the body does. It is a physical-metaphysical reality that persists. The smoke rising from the shroud is evidence.

Ahmad Zahir's delivery of this poem has been described by listeners as among his most committed performances — a voice that sounds as though the determination being sung is the singer's own, not a classical text at arm's length.

Poetic Source & Adaptation

Hafiz

From Hafiz's Divan. The ghazal is built on a single vow repeated at the start and close: 'Dast az talab nadaram ta kam-e del bar-ayad' — I will not withdraw my hand from seeking until the heart's desire is achieved. The imagery escalates from longing to death to the smoke-filled grave — the fire of desire outlasting the body.
