برو بابا ما کتت نستم
Boro Baba Ma Katet Nastam
“Go, I Wasn't Cutting You”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
May I be a sacrifice for the whiteness of your neck Go — I am not with you If God wills it, let us sit together Go — I am not with you Let us sit together like a clear mirror So that no sourness remains in either of our hearts Go — I am not with you
You are from the city, I am from the village Ah, no — go, I am not with you
Come, let us go away from this land, you and I Go — I am not with you

About This Recording
Boro Baba Ma Katet Nastam is a playful folk song structured around a performed rejection that is transparently insincere. 'Go — I am not with you' (boro, ma katet nastam) is the refrain, but everything around it contradicts it: the speaker is paying careful attention, noticing the whiteness of the neck, wanting to sit together until no sourness remains, proposing to leave the land together. The refrain is a performance of indifference that deceives no one.
The city-village contrast — 'You are from the city, I am from the village' — introduces a social dimension: a difference of background that might be an obstacle to union. In Afghan folk tradition, city and village are different worlds with different manners, expectations, and social codes. The speaker acknowledges the difference and says 'go' — but immediately follows with 'come, let us go away from this land together,' which overrides every obstacle at once.
The self-offering — 'may I be a sacrifice for the whiteness of your neck' (fida-e safidi-e gerdan-e tu) — is a standard expression of devotion in Dari folk song: the speaker offers themselves as a sacrifice (fida, qurban) to a specific physical detail of the beloved. It is elaborate praise compressed into a formula. The neck's whiteness is noticed; the sacrifice is offered; the refrain says go. The contradiction is the song.
