English Translation

I am ill and have nothing but a piece of my torn liver Except to die of your grief — I have no remedy

If I lament I disturb you And if I show patience — I have no heart of stone

If I go far I will die of longing for your face If I come near — I have no strength to gaze at you

I am ill and have nothing but a piece of my torn liver Except to die of your grief — I have no remedy

About This Recording

Bimaram O Ghair Az Jigare — I Am Ill — is a song of pure contradiction. Every position the speaker might adopt is immediately cancelled by an equally valid impossibility. The formal structure mirrors the condition: two halves of each couplet negate each other, leaving the speaker suspended between equally untenable options.

The liver (jigar) in Persian lyric is not anatomy but the seat of feeling — specifically the deeper, more burning form of grief associated with the liver rather than the heart. 'A piece of my torn liver' is what remains after love has taken everything else: not the heart, not the soul, but a fragment of the visceral organ of feeling. The medicine offered — 'to die of your grief' — is the only remedy available because all other remedies require conditions the speaker cannot achieve.

'If I go far I will die of longing for your face / If I come near — I have no strength to gaze at you' — the spatial paradox completes the pattern. Distance kills; proximity overwhelms. There is no survivable position. The song returns to its opening couplet to confirm that nothing has been resolved: the fragment of liver is still all that remains, the only remedy still death from the grief.
