Baske Jafa Ze Khar O Gul
“So Much Cruelty from the Thorn and Flower”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
From so much cruelty of thorn and flower, the heart's eye has taken fright Like a breeze from this garden, I have pulled my feet away I have pulled my feet away I have pulled my feet away
The fruit of this span of life was the company of acquaintances Since you cut yourself from me, I have cut myself from the world
Since you cut yourself from me, separation's grief has slain me Since you...

From so much cruelty of thorn and flower, the heart's eye has taken fright — since you cut yourself from me, I have cut myself from the world; separation's grief has slain me.
About This Recording
Baske Jafa Ze Khar O Gul opens in the garden — the standard space of Persian lyric — but addresses it as a place of cruelty rather than beauty. Thorn and flower (khar o gul) are the garden's two aspects: pain and beauty, inseparable. From too much of both, the heart's eye has taken fright. The speaker withdraws — 'like a breeze from this garden, I have pulled my feet away' — using the image of a breeze, which cannot stay anywhere, to describe voluntary detachment.
The middle stanza introduces the chain of reciprocal withdrawal: 'Since you cut yourself from me, I have cut myself from the world.' The beloved's departure becomes the speaker's departure from everything. This is a logical sequence in the ghazal tradition — if the beloved was the speaker's entire world, removing the beloved removes the world — but also a description of grief's actual phenomenology: loss of one person can make the entire social world feel inaccessible.
The song text as preserved is incomplete (the final stanza breaks off), suggesting this may be a partial recording or that Zahir performed it in an abbreviated form. Even truncated, the song captures the particular sadness of someone who has not been abandoned dramatically but simply cut from — a quiet severance, 'like a breeze,' which is among the most difficult departures to recover from because it leaves no single moment of break to locate.
