English Translation

I will curse you, I will curse you May you be warm — may your bread be all cold

I told you not to go alone on the city road — you cruel one, you went I told you not to go to the city park without us — you cruel one, you went I will curse you, I will curse you May you be warm — may your bread be all cold

I said come to my ruined little house — you said no, no I said do not look toward anyone — I saw you, you looked I will curse you, I will curse you May you be warm — may your bread be all cold

I will curse you — may you be warm but may your bread be cold. You went alone on the city road, to the park without us, you said no to my ruined house, and you looked at others despite your promise.

About This Recording

Badwayet Konom is one of the most domestically specific songs in Ahmad Zahir's catalog — and one of the lightest in tone. The curse invoked ('May you be warm — may your bread be all cold') is almost comic in its mildness, the kind of imprecation that signals exasperation rather than genuine malice. Cold bread is an inconvenience, not a catastrophe; the speaker's anger is proportionately mild.

The grievances listed are equally domestic: going alone on the city road (a safety concern or proprietary one), going to the city park without the speaker (a social transgression), refusing to come to the ruined little house (a rejection of intimacy), and looking at others (faithlessness). Each is a small breach, and the repetition of the refrain after each makes the catalog feel like a tally being kept, each entry marked with the same impotent imprecation.

The ruined little house (khana-ye wirani) is the speaker's home — 'ruined' in the sense of modest, humble, and possibly in disrepair from the speaker's own grief-stricken neglect. The beloved's refusal to enter it is a refusal of the speaker's world entirely. Zahir performs this with a warmth that keeps the song from becoming bitter — the curse is the only power available to someone who has no other leverage.
