Ba Khabar Bash

'Be aware, be aware! / Tonight I am coming to you' — the opening is a warning, almost a command. 'Ba khabar bash' means be prepared, take heed: the speaker is announcing arrival with advance notice, not asking permission. The tone is unlike most of Zahir's recorded catalog, which tends toward longing and lamentation; this is declaration.

'I will untie the knot of your tresses / I will press my lips to yours' — the specificity of the actions promised, in order, suggests a scene already imagined in full. The tresses (zolf) in Persian poetry are one of the beloved's most powerful attributes — their knotting and unknotting is a recurring erotic and mystical image.

'Whether you wish it or not' — the closing phrase is the most arresting in the song, and the most unusual. In the ghazal tradition, the beloved's indifference or cruelty is usually accepted; the lover suffers, waits, pleads. Here the speaker simply overrides the question of consent with an announcement. Zahir delivers it with warmth rather than threat, which shifts the register from command to playfulness — a man certain of what he wants.
