English Translation

With your fiery nature, with the sword of your brow You shed my heart's blood — alas, alas, alas You shed and fled — alas, alas, alas With your gentle words, with your warm glance You burned my heart and soul — alas, alas, alas You kindled the fire — alas, alas, alas

O coquette, bow-browed, walking like a cypress Against the helpless heart — with your lash-like spear A hundred cutting wounds you struck — alas, alas, alas

At the rival's feast last night you broke a glass You danced like a wave and shook your precious ringlets You played a trick on me — alas, alas, alas

With your fiery nature and sword-brow you shed my heart's blood; with gentle words and warm glance you burned my soul; at the rival's feast you danced like a wave — alas, alas, alas.

About This Recording

Ba Atashen Khoy Khod is built around the tripartite structure of the beloved's weapons: fire (atashen khoy — fiery nature), gentleness (narm goftar — gentle words), and public display (dancing at the rival's feast). Each stanza describes a different form of destruction, and each ends with the refrain 'alas, alas, alas' — the lamentation that accumulates across the song.

The physical metaphors drawn from warfare — 'sword of your brow,' 'lash-like spear,' 'cutting wounds' — are conventional in Persian lyric, where the beloved's physical features are regularly described as weapons. The eyebrow (abroo) bent like a bow, the eyelashes as arrows, the glance as a spear: the taxonomy of the beloved's beauty as arsenal is well-established. What Ba Atashen Khoy Khod does with this convention is intensify it with the repeated lamentation rather than ironic detachment.

The final scene — at the rival's feast, breaking a glass, dancing like a wave, shaking precious ringlets — is the most socially specific of the three stanzas. The first two are interior (what was done to the speaker's heart and soul); the last is exterior (what was done publicly, in the rival's house, before witnesses). The 'trick' (hilay) played there is the worst because it was performed for an audience. The alas at the end carries the weight of public humiliation as well as private grief.
