English Translation

O my rose garden, my garden and my spring O candle of my tomb — come, come

The fire of your love burns my body I am destroyed by you and you are my enemy Like a moth in hope of union with you I burned, O my shining candle

O my darling, O my sweet companion You are my Pleiades — come, come

Your dark eyes and your moon-like face Have taken me from myself in the intoxication of your gaze Day and night restlessly in your pursuit I will be branded if there is a mark on your road

O my rose garden, my spring — the fire of your love burns my body; like a moth in hope of union I burned at your candle; your dark eyes and moon-like face take me from myself; day and night I pursue you.

About This Recording

Aye Gulzare Man — O My Rose Garden — is built on the moth-and-candle figure that appears throughout Persian lyric tradition. The moth is the lover; the candle is the beloved. The moth circles the candle knowing it will be burned; it circles anyway because the alternative — not circling — is unbearable. 'Like a moth in hope of union with you / I burned, O my shining candle.' The union of moth and candle is destruction; the hope that drives the circling is real, even though it ends in the same way every time.

The beloved is addressed through a sequence of images: rose garden (gulzar), spring (bahar), candle (sham), Pleiades (Parvin). The Pleiades (Parvin or Pleiades in Persian astronomy) are associated with beauty, distance, and the unreachable. The shift from garden and candle — things one might approach — to a star cluster marks the escalation of the beloved's inaccessibility.

The final stanza brings it down to earth: 'Your dark eyes and your moon-like face / Have taken me from myself in the intoxication of your gaze / Day and night restlessly in your pursuit / I will be branded if there is a mark on your road.' The brand (dagh) from the beloved's road is the mark of having been there — a kind of spiritual passport stamp. The speaker offers to be marked by whatever the pursuit costs.
