Ay Shohlaye Hazin
“O Sad Flame”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
O sorrowful flame O fiery love O final pain
Is this your fervor or the madness of tears Or my poem that gives me everlasting burning? I will seek it no more I will not wander for it at night I will not tell it a secret
O sorrowful flame O fiery love O final pain
Countless nights beside the stream in the mountain's expanse Until in longing and lament and pain and torment I quietly travel the silent road of those who are gone Beside the mountain — at the foot of the waterfall

O sorrowful flame — the speaker asks whether it is the beloved's fervor or their own tears that gives them everlasting burning; then resolves to stop seeking, stop wandering, stop telling secrets — and quietly travel the silent road of those who are gone.
About This Recording
Ay Shohlaye Hazin — O Sorrowful Flame — is a poem of resignation, structured as a farewell to seeking. The 'sorrowful flame' (shohlaye hazin) is the composite image at the center: fire (shohal, flame, ardor) qualified by grief (hazin, sorrowful, melancholic). This flame neither blazes freely nor goes out; it burns in the register of sorrow.
The central question — 'Is this your fervor or the madness of tears / Or my poem that gives me everlasting burning?' — refuses to settle the cause of suffering. Three possible origins are named: the beloved's passion, the speaker's own tear-madness, or the act of making poetry itself. The poem may be its own source of perpetuation: to sing of burning is to continue burning.
The resolution — 'I will seek it no more / I will not wander for it at night / I will not tell it a secret' — is a triple withdrawal. The speaker stops seeking, stops wandering, stops confiding. And then: 'I quietly travel the silent road of those who are gone / Beside the mountain — at the foot of the waterfall.' The dead have their own road, and the speaker is prepared to walk it. Zahir sings the phrase 'silent road' (rah-e khamosh) with a quality of genuine acceptance rather than despair.
