Ahange Zendage
“The Melody of Life”
Lyrics
Lyrics updated · July 2026English Translation
The song of life sang into my ear: Turn toward love, for time is short
In the expanse of the world, I — a fistful of dust — Have known no realm other than longing
Something called a heart existed, it seems And has fallen from the eye of fate's expectation

The song of life sang into my ear: turn toward love, for time is short. A philosophical three-couplet poem — the speaker a fistful of dust in the world's expanse, knowing no realm but longing.
About This Recording
'The song of life sang into my ear: / Turn toward love, for time is short' — the framing device is unusual: life itself delivers a message. Not an advisor, not a wise elder, not a dream or a star — the song of life (ahang-e-zendage) as a personified counselor. Its advice is simple: turn toward love because time is short. This is Omar Khayyam's premise distilled.
'In the expanse of the world, I — a fistful of dust — / Have known no realm other than longing' — the self reduced to a fistful of dust (moshti khak) in the 'expanse of the world' (pahn-e-alam) produces the classical Sufi scale: the self is almost nothing; the world is almost everything; and what the self knows is only longing. No territory other than desire has been mapped.
'Something called a heart existed, it seems / And has fallen from the eye of fate's expectation' — the tentative 'it seems' (goya) signals distance: the speaker describes their own heart as if learning about it secondhand. A heart that has fallen from fate's expectation is one that destiny had something planned for — and the heart has failed that plan, or the plan has failed the heart.
